Flo's Guide to Shopping Off-Price Retailers

Finally: Here is my guide to shopping at The TJX Companies' line of stores: T.J Maxx, HomeGoods and Marshall's (my personal favorite).

1) Background

Off-price retailers, such as T.J. Maxx, Filene's Basement, Loehman's or DSW, sell clothes at a discount. (See Wiki Article)They usually get clothes at a cheaper price because a designer makes too many of a department store can't sell out their stock. The retailers get these clothes at discounted prices, and these savings are then passed onto you. You many wonder: how do they make any money? Well they make money by moving lots of lower priced inventory quickly. Addidionally many keep their costs down by store appearance and set-up (hence the browsing through racks).

I know some people get turned off by off-price retailers claiming they aren't the "real thing." Well guess what: they are. These people just don't understand that U.S. Polo Assoc. clothing is not fake Ralph Lauren. It's a different company. Off-price retailers do sell legitimate Ralph Lauren clothes, just shop smart.

2) Things to Watch Out For

First things first, as mentioned above: know your designers. Also know that many designers have "cheaper" brands, but they are still good quality, many times just different style. These include labels such as Michael by Michael Kors. These are still legitimate, expensive items, so if you're worried, just do some research before-hand.

When shopping, look for quality. Check fabrics and note the percentages. Cotton, Leather, Silk and Cashmere are always fool-proof choices. If you are buying handbags or shoes, and are not vegetarian/vegan, look for leather ones. They quality is much better, they feel better and will last longer. Additionally, the prices are not always much steeper (ok with the good leather handbags they are, but totally worth it). Beware: magnetic closures on handbags could ruin your credit cards, so try to steer clear. And don't forget to check your merchandise! Make sure there are no rips/missing embellishments or stains. If it's something you think you can fix, you can usually get 10% off if you ask, and the item is regular price.

Also, the stores do sometimes carry cheaper brands, especially in Juniors, so pay attention to quality. For trendy items, it may be ok to go for cheap over quality, especially for a teenager who will only wear it 3 times. But the real joy comes not from $15 Levis, but from $50  7 For All Mankind or True Religion jeans. That's where the skill comes in, really looking at the items. (does your store, carry crap, try a store in a different area, products get allocated based on what sells)

How to Shop TJX Stores: 3 Ways

3) Browsing

This is the usually how you will shop, just for the fun of it. In this case, take your time. Go through the racks, check the clearance, look at shoes, check the home section. Follow the rules above and you should be all set. Just have fun. If you don't enjoy rummaging through racks for fun, then this is not your type of shopping. In that case, it's best to just use a method below.

4) Budget Browsing

I call this budget browsing as I usually do this type of shopping, especially at the end of a season, such as summer right now, when 1/2 of the store seems to be clearance items. In this type of shopping you are browsing only clearance sections.

This is highly effective if you are on a budget. There is little worry that something will be too expensive once you look at the tag. Get to know your store and where the clearance sections are (usually marked with red signs both hanging and on the racks). Then just go to them right away. I usually go to shoes, w omen's, accessories and home goods, in that order. When lots of stuff is on clearance, you can find some amazing finds. If I don't feel like browsing everything, I just walk through glancing for things that pop-out and say "Hello, try me on!" I tend to look for unique items because that's the wonderful thing about these stores.

It's less likely that you will run into people wearing the same thing, and even less likely that people will say "oh that's from Express (the worst store for this) or that's from Banana" because the stores only carry so many items and once you have gone in once, you can totally remember everything they had (especially if you once worked in retail).

Also, very important: check all the sizes! This is really great now, with oversized items being in fashion. I usually wear a small or medium but I always check the large and even extra large for sweaters and tops that I'll wear as tunics with leggings (see pink top post).

5) On a Mission

Last, but not least, is how to shop for something in particular. This takes willpower. You must head ONLY to the sections where you need something. Go there, check it out (if home goods be sure to check near the registers too or in special sections (such as back to college), and if there is nothing there, get out.

Now I admit, I usually always check the shoe clearance, because it's so fast. It's organized by size on the wall so I can just glance over it. I do this because stuff goes fast. When you see something in these stores, you need to buy it or it may not be there next time. Sometimes though, especially with shoes, I will wait until the price decreases. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes they're gone. But if there really is something you want to wait on, try to wait as it will go on sale if no one buys it first. Then, if it's gone, it wasn't meant to be.

Flo's Basic Rules to Shopping TJX Stores

1. Don't be turned off by browsing through racks: that's the fun part, that's why it's called SHOPPING

2. Don't be turned off by the idea of "discount store;" it's a recession, don't be so uptight and snobbish, the quality of most of these items probably beats that crap you bought at a "regular store" for 3 times the price any day

3. Look for quality, especially with shoes and handbags (leather!), as this is most easily assessed by others

4. Browse the clearance: there are some amazing deals here!

5. Browse other sizes/styles: try on an oversized top; try that shirt with all the colors, go for a leopard print skirt: these stores are so cheap you can take risks, and your fashion sense will only be the better for it

6. If looking for something particular, look in that section, then get out

7. Always check here first. Need new wine glasses? Need new shoes? Need a cute dog leash? IT'S ALL CHEAPER HERE (usually, sometimes beat only by Amazon or ridiculous sales).

Questions? Need a lesson? Ask me: I've been doing this since I was in elementary school and my conviction that I can get almost anything at one of these stores has only gotten stronger.

Fabulous Finds

So a new job means money. Yes! But it also means a need for new clothes, because I need to dress semi-professionally at least. That means no more shopping in the juniors department and no more looking like I shopped in the juniors department. So what do I do? I head to Marshall's with my mom and we end up laying down a good $200 on stuff we just can't not get. Here's some of our favorite Marshall's finds as of late. (Have I mentioned yet that I love Marshall's?)

I got these great Kenar super dark sparkly demin (though not jeans just a really fine denim type of fabric)  pants for  $24.99 and the same fabric in a lovely Kenar pencil skirt for only $19.99. Serious about my new job: yes I am.
I also grabbed this great periwinkle blue viscose tank by Kenar for only $12.99! The wrapping across the waist is so flattering. The funniest part: my sister actually bought this top 2 weeks ago, now I got it too!
Yet another Kenar item. This I found on clearance for only $10! It's really fun. I love the ruffles and I can wear it to work.
Shoes! And this time they're sensible. I found these leather eyelet flats on the clearance wall for only $22! I love them. The bottoms are so squishy and soft, and the eyelet helps my foot breathe in the summer. Perfect work shoes, especially since the light brown can even work with black.
Those two thing: a dog collar for my kitten Lars, it was on clearance for $2. It's plastic so it won't start to fray like his current fabric collar. Then I bought a chocolate brown one piece with rouching across the belly. This will work great to get me more confident at the pool and work slowly to bikinis, plus I can wear it all summer long for swimming to workout after work. Only $19.99 and so flattering.
Those last three are my mom's finds. A great black Kenar top for only $12 on sale, perfect-for-summer pinstripe white, wide-leg Lauren by Ralph Lauren pants for only $39.99, and finally a fun, flowy snakeskin print Kenneth Cole blouse for $20 (originally $74!).
And last, but never least, my mom's shoe finds. The Sam Edelman snakeskin sandals were only $34.99 and look great. Casual, but with fabulous shine. Then, she needed higher shoes to go with the white, wide-leg pants, so she invested in some black leather Michael by Michael Kors cork platforms. They look perfect with the pants, and are the perfect height for women 40+.

I hope your hunts at Marshall's go as great as mine do. Search the racks for some Kenar items- they have amazing details that make them look way more expensive than they are. Also perfect for this summer: nautical strips, and the striped Ralph Lauren tees are perfect. Add to a skirt or shorts with white sneakers like Keds, and you're good to go.

Stay tuned, soon to be added: a guide to shopping at off-price retailers like Marshall's, T.J. Maxx, Home Goods and Loehmans. For you yet to be converted, trust me: when there is a will to find great deals, there is definitely a way.

(BTW: sitting here right now as my mom goes through her closet, and taking anything good she throws my way haha)

Fabulous Finds

Everything is cheaper at Marshall's. Usually, it is also better.

I have been MIA for a little over a month now due to stress with the job search. But guess what?! I started my new job today! As a sales assistant at a local sales company that sells toys from manufacturers to stores. Yay!

So of course you all know what this means: I went shopping.

Below I'm going to show you my latest Marshall's finds, not only are they cheap but they are awesome for summer!

Let's start with my practical choice: a new khaki pencil skirt (only $19.99) from Kenar for my new job. Maybe I will wear it tomorrow? I have all black ones, but I like the khaki for summer, and it looks great with white or bright blues and pinks.

Next, my favorite: dresses. The first I found was this flower print bubble dress with a big bow on the bust. It looks great when paired with a rugged (or even studded) black leather belt and was only $19.99. The next one, at the same price, is a white, strapless dress that looks amazing with a colorful blue or green waist belt and platforms. Then we have a 70s-ish quarter-sleeved polka-dot-lace dress. It's great, and so slimming even though it's white, and the trapezoid-like cut of the collar is amazing. The only thing I need to fix: I have to shorten those elbow ties, they are WAY too long, but at $24.99 I'm fine with that. Throw this on with silver or gold sandals and you're all set.

Additionally I found these two pieces that are very beachy/hippie. The coral piece is probably a shirt, but it's long enough to be a dress on me, so I'm wearing it as that. At $12.99 it was one cheap "dress," I just have to watch when I bend over. The turquoise dress has amazing colorful stitched edges, and is great with flip flops to the beach or cork/wood wedges with fun jewelry for a night out. Another steal at $16.99.

Finally, we move on to the tops. This white, flowy jersey tank from Kenar is amazing. The beading makes it look much more expensive than the $19.99 I spent on it. The blue top is also great and cinches in at the waist to slim you down. It looks amazing with white and works great with a cardigan for work: only $14.99. Finally, the DKNY white cotton blouse was a great find. It's smocked at the bottom hem allowing it to billow out, perfect for a bloated day. And at only $24.99, it reminds me why I love Marshall's so much for all it's designer options.

My last find was not at Marshall's, but I found an awesome pair of white skinny jeans at New York & Company for about $24 on sale. They reach your ankle, so they look great rolled up or with ankle-strap heels for a night out.

I didn't do this shopping all at once of course, I have merely been to busy to update. Hopefully this summer I can share lots of great finds with you all. Let's hope summer comes soon!

Fabulous Finds

It's been snowing a lot this winter. Being in Jersey and not the city this winter really lets me enjoy it. Last week it snowed so much that Wednesday was a snow day for everyone and my mom and I went for a walk trudging through the snow, it was really nice.

This is the little creek near my townhouse complex, so pretty all snowed in.

On Valentine's Day, for lack of a boyfriend, I went shopping with my mom. We went to the Franklin Mills outlet mall in PA. The stores there were decent, but the only really good outlets there are the Polo Ralph Lauren outlet and the Saks 5th Avenue Off 5th store. They had some great stuff!

But as per usual, my mom and I ended up in the Marshall's/Home Goods attached to the store. It is huge! The home section there is amazing and I would definitely go back if just for that, though the T.J. Maxx/Home Goods in Bridgewater, NJ is great as well. I love finding unique furniture there for a good price, like this great little bright yellow metal outdoor table and chair set for only $129! It is adorable for a small patio or deck.

And I love the little cutouts!

There was also this great shruggy light salmon-colored knit cardigan for only $14.99 but I didn't get it.

What I did end up with was a cute little gray jersey dress that is smocked at the waist for $19.99 and another great Cocoa zip-up hoodie for $24.99. These are lined with fur (I already have 2 others in green and blue) and the fur in this one is light, and extra soft and the bright color is perfect for spring.

My mom ended up with this great Calvin Klein shirt dress for only $49.99, it's slimming and the details are great.

In other news, today was Mardi Gras and my mom, sister and I celebrated by making brownies and eating them with ice cream and cold milk. So good. Tomorrow Lent starts and even though I am not religious, I can use it as motivation and plan to give up chocolate and snacking on anything unhealthy, and plan on going on my Wii Fit every day, even if just to do the body test. Once I get on, maybe I will be more likely to do some training on it. Hopefully I can find a job soon!!! Then I can find a lovely apartment and lovely cheap finds to decorate it! Keep your fingers crossed, I know I am.

Fabulous Finds

This fabulous find is one that I plan to cherish for many years to come. It will be a companion to me during tough times and is fun to play with.

My find? A clearance kitty! Welcome...Lars.

He is adorable isn't he...he naps a lot.

The shelter in my area had a "Home for the Holidays" event and all cats under five-years-old were $50 (that's half price) and all over five-years-old were free. Lars is my little black, halloweeny, boy. And at 3 1/2 months he's just a baby!

He is friendly and loves to play with his feather toy- best investment ever.

However, having a kitten is quite pricey as I soon found out. Word to the wise: do not buy food and litter and such at a large pet store like PetCo. Expensive. Though they did give me 10% off for just having adopted Lars.

I will have to search TJ Maxx and Marshalls for sufficiently adorable and affordable food bowls for him as well as toys.

His trip to the vet was also emptying my wallet. It's $45 for a check-up and then another $30 for his medications since he needed medicine and eye drops for his conjunctivitis and possible upper respiratory cold. Poor thing. On top of that, he has a slight heart murmur, but the vet said hopefully it will go away. Otherwise I should probably get pet insurance if he needs lots of treatment or tests for it.

Does anyone have any experience or advice on good, but affordable pet insurance?

Fabulous Finds

Today I went Christmas shopping and ended up buying even more for myself.

The main reason I love Marshall's (and T.J. Maxx) is the prices...and the selection. It's like a scavenger hunt. It's thrift store prices without the old mothball smell.

And when I find something great, it excites me. So today, besides a cozy long sleeve organic cotton tee for $9.99 and a great printed jersey dress for $10 (didn't try it on though, hope it fits), I got some really great finds, all for under $3!:

A Jean Paul Gaultier Prêt-à-Porter 2009 Limited Edition Evian bottle: $1.99

I saw this and thought neat! I didn't know that this thing sells for $13.95 online, and don't ask me who would pay that much for a special water bottle. But it is a perfectly fun, unique decoration for a fashionista like myself.

A great indigo ribbon headband: 99 cents

Perfect size bow- small but visible. And the color is not bright, but still draws attention.

A sheer green and blue plaid button-up ruffled blouse with a smocked waist: $2.50

Sure it's polyester and a shirt still on clearance from summer, but it's adorable and the colors are perfect to layer over a black turtleneck or under a bright-colored cashmere cami. Adorable.

So, have you found any good deals lately?

Fabulous Find?

Today I was sold a dress at BCBG that looked totally great on.

Except it was a size too small and I now need to lose 5 pounds to wear it without fear of ripping.

Except it was on sale and is not returnable.

Except it has a rip at the zipper I need to fix somehow.

All because it looked great once the saleswomen squeezed me into it, and it was 70% off. Did I make a horrible mistake? Will getting me into this thing be like some movie scene of a woman being laced into a corset? Stay tuned.
